Cloud development EMC have officially announced the widely rumoured "Pivotal Initiative", a new spin-off company which is being composed of assets of both EMC and its VMware subsidiary. These include EMC's Greenplum and Cetas big data analytics, Pivotal Labs agile development tools along with the open source developing SpringSource Java frameworks. GemFire data caching (as part of VMware's VFabric) and the VMware CloudFoundry PaaS (Platform-as-a-Service) are also involved.

The new group will be led by Paul Maritz, former VMware CEO and current EMC Chief Strategy Officer, and around 600 employees of VMware and 800 EMC employees will be part of the new organisation. Pivotal Initiative is expected to be formally complete by the second quarter of 2013 and the full business structure will be determined by then. The new company is aimed at the cloud and big data analytics businesses and the separation into its own company will allow VMware to focus on its virtualisation business. VMware and EMC say they will update customers on the progress of the initiative during the first quarter of 2013.
