The openSUSE community has announced that the openSUSE Conference 2013 will take place from 18 to 22 July at the Olympic Museum in Thessaloniki in Greece. The conference, themed with the slogan "Power to the Geeko", aims to spotlight the grass-roots nature of the open source project. The fifth annual event of its kind, this year's incarnation of the conference is the first time that the organisation lies entirely in the hand of volunteers, with SUSE employees supporting the event mostly in their free time.

As Jos Poortvliet, openSUSE Community Manager, points out, the transition of control over the openSUSE conference to the community is almost complete. Attending the event is free, but supporter tickets are available for $50 and $250 with money from these sales being used to fund the openSUSE Travel Support Program. The aim of the Travel Support Program is to sponsor travel and accommodation for openSUSE developers and contributors who otherwise could not afford to attend the conference. The organisers of the conference are also looking for help with the event's web site and have asked interested parties to sign up on the corresponding mailing list if they are prepared to lend a hand.

The program for the openSUSE Conference 2013 is currently being worked on and the organisers will put out a call for papers "in short order". Registration for the conference is expected to open in February.
