LPI News-letter January 2004
Hello there, The Linux Professional Institute newsletter is an informal way of informing you of what is going on at LPI and if anyone has any comments, thoughts or ideas on what we should be adding to the news letter - please let me know. This month the items on the News-letter are;
1: WSIS in Geneva. LPI attended the World Summit on the Information Society in Geneva last December. Evan Leibovitch, president of LPI, wrote a brief synopsis of the event as he saw it; http://www.linuxworld.com/story/39197.htm 2: Building Level 3 and updating Level 2. LPI appreciates the support they have received from the Linux Community. We now need your help again to build the Level 3 exams and the Level 2 update.
We're working really hard to put together a system to enable community development on a wide, ongoing scale. The first step of this has been opening up our Job Task Analysis collection system. We're now accepting new tasks for TWO Level 3 exam candidate subjects, Security and Samba. We're also looking for any new tasks or items for Level 2. Please stop in and submit your ideas and comments. https://www.lpi.org/en/examdev/index.html 3: The LPI exams are being translated into French, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese and German. We are delighted to be able to let you know that the process is being put in place to ensure quality translations of the LPI exams. We hope to have this rolled out in the next few months. We will post more details on this exciting project as it nears completion. 4: Linux World - New York
LPI once again attended Linux World in New York as the certification sponsor. We had a very popular exam lab where 200 candidates took the exams. Our booth was very successful, and many interested attendees learned about LPI. We were ably assisted by some wonderful volunteers who took time out to lend a hand. Our thanks to; Faber Fedor, Jason Lim, Duffy Fron, James Stanger and the LPI-US guys who came from Mississippi to help out; Wesley, Matthew, Jake and John. Thanks very much for all your help, we couldn't have managed without you. Glenn McKnight, our director of program development, will attend the FOSDEM conference in Brussels on February 21 and 22. This conference is the third Free and Open source Software Developers' European Meeting which is organized by volunteers to promote the widespread use of Free and Open Source software in Europe. Glenn will be offering exam 101 in an exam lab during his trip to Brussels - if you are interested in taking the LPI exam, please contact him for further details; [E-mail:glenn@lpi.org]
The exam lab will be held here; Cost per exam will be 20 Euros. 6. http://www.tldp.org/guides.html The Linux Documentation Project (LDP)works on developing good, reliable documentation for the Linux operating system. LPI created a document for use by the community to provide useful information on how to generate positive public relations and news media coverage for Linux. This guide has been accepted by the LDP and we are proud to announce our contribution to the community. 7. Some interesting articles;
A piece about a training camp leading to LPI certification. http://www.unixreview.com/documents/s=8989/ur0401h/ 8. The development of the translated website has been a tremendous success. We have many translations of the site, and we are now announcing our newest languages; Romanian and Hindi.

Registering for an exam...... Please note that you must register at the LPI website for an LPI ID number and create a members account before you register for your exam at Vue or Prometric. Please go to this site to register; https://www.lpi.org/en/register.html Ensure you have your LPI ID number when you go to take your LPI exam. 10. An open letter from the LPI-USA affiliate; LPI-US is launching several new initiatives to boost the visibility of the LPI Certification program within the US marketplace. Our goal is to substantially increase the number of LPI exams taken and certifications awarded, and to develop a network of approved Training Partners and LPI Linux User Groups (LPI-LUGs) affiliated with LPI and LPI-US.
LPI-US is also signing up new LPI Approved Training Partners (LATPs) throughout the US. By increasing the number of LATPs, LPI-US will help to increase the number of LPI training classes being offered and grow the number of exams proctored. Our third initiative for this new year is to market the LPI Certification program to colleges and universities around the country. At the University of Southern Mississippi the Computer Science department is offering an Advanced Linux class, which is being based around the Level I LPIC objectives. Students are encouraged to use the material and class as training for the LPI 101 and 102 exams. The training material and structure of this class will be used as a template for other secondary education institutions to begin integrating the LPIC program into their computer and technology based curricula. We look forward to the 2004 year as the new LPI-US Affiliate, and will work with LPI, Inc. and all the other Affiliates to nurture and grow the LPIC program in the United States to new heights and numbers this year. -- If you would like to help and create a strong affiliate in the US please contact;
