Canonical Is Shutting Down Ubuntu Friendly

Canonical is going to finally shutdown Ubuntu Friendly, their community approach for users to share with other Ubuntu users how well their laptops/desktops work with the Linux distribution.

While we are focused on not only Linux hardware compatibility at Phoronix but also to the performance and maximum features of a given computer component, Ubuntu Friendly was more broadly focused on how a desktop/laptop as a whole works with Ubuntu Linux. However, the site wasn't too useful, the displayed information was minimal, and it's been just a mess.

Even going back to early last year Ubuntu Friendly was in a failing state, just like the Ubuntu component hardware list. Now though they are finally ready to "sunset" the project on the 15th of September.

Ara Pulido of Canonical announced this morning that "the success of the tool has been minimal", Ubuntu users can look at Canonical's certification list, and that the cost of maintenance of Ubuntu Friendly's infrastructure is too great. As a result, it's being shutdown.
