FreeBSD 10.0 Is Still Running Behind Schedule

There were plans originally to ship FreeBSD 10.0 as stable in November, but that isn't going to happen. It's not even clear if FreeBSD 10.0-RELEASE will be ready to ship before the end of the calendar year, but at least progress is being made and when the release does happen there's a great number of new features.

After being in alpha form for a while, FreeBSD betas began in October. With the original FreeBSD 10.0 release process, there would be four betas and three release candidates followed by the official "RELEASE" build. This release was expected to happen on 24 November 2013.

As of today, FreeBSD 10.0 Beta 4 hasn't happened yet but might come next week. The latest release cycle status update was shared today via the FreeBSD mailing list. The delay is still due to addressing bugs in FreeBSD packages.

With still having to get through three release candidates after the fourth beta, it will be tough to deliver FreeBSD 10.0 this calendar year especially with having several holidays coming up. The non-updated FreeBSD 10.0 release schedule can be found at FreeBSD.org.

At least when the belated FreeBSD 10.0 release does take place, it's coming with many new FreeBSD features.
