KDE On Wayland To Be Focus For Next Few Months

KDE on Wayland should get much love in 2014.

Martin Gräßlin, the long-time KWin window maintainer for KDE, has written a new blog post about working full-time on KDE/KWin for the past year. Martin had joined Blue Systems as one of several employees focused upon KDE support. In his blog post he looks back over the past year and the KDE accomplishments. He also reiterated that running KWin on Qt 5 is taking great shape and so is the new Plasma Workspaces 2 with KDE Frameworks 5.

At the end of the blog post he also noted that at Blue Systems they will be focusing much upon improvements for KDE on Wayland over the next few months. Martin wrote, "Of course Wayland will be the big item for 2014. It’s one of our internal aims for the next few months and given that I had focused mostly on porting of all kind of workspace applications I’m looking forward to work on it again. Given that the number of applications ported to Qt 5 is increasing each day it will also be a nice thing to work on with hopefully soon switching to a dog-foodable environment having real-world Wayland enabled applications and not just the Wayland demo apps."

So over the next few months it should be very exciting times for Linux desktop users wishing to experiment with Wayland. Already GNOME 3.10 has basic Wayland support while it too is being much improved over the next few months for GNOME 3.12.
