Mark Shuttleworth Talks Up The Phone's Bottom Edge On Ubuntu
Daniel Oliver, a Canonical designer, earlier this week blogged about loving the bottom edge of phones. "The bottom edge is the most pleasurable edge to use. Grab a phone, any phone, and slide your thumb up over the bottom edge, then back. Go on, do it a few times. Feel good? Yeah, our extensive research suggests this feels pretty amazing to pretty much everyone."
The Canonical design post goes on to talk about Ubuntu developers having access to the screen's bottom edge to do/display as they wish rather than be limited by OS restrictions. Oliver said, "In fact, getting THIS ONE THING perfect is the most important thing you do when you bring your app to Ubuntu. Pretty much everything else is just… you know, obvious. But creating a bottom edge experience that is exactly perfect for your app and consistent with our values is where the magic happens." That blog post went on to talk -- and also share a few videos of Ubuntu apps -- about the bottom edge.
Mark Shuttleworth has written a blog post this Saturday morning to also talk up the bottom edge advantage of Ubuntu on phones/tablets. Mark's post is entitled The very best edge of all. Mark wrote, "Here’s the key thing – that bottom edge is the one thing you are guaranteed to want to do more innovatively on Ubuntu than on any other mobile platform. So if you are creating a portable app, targeting a few different environments, that’s the thing to take extra time over for your Ubuntu version. That’s the place to brainstorm, try out ideas on your friends, make a few mockups. It’s the place you really express the single most important aspects of your application, because it’s the fastest, grooviest gesture in the book, and it's all yours on Ubuntu."
