Alexandre Julliard had the pleasure of announcing the immediate availability for download and testing of a brand-new development release of Wine, an open-source application that allows Linux users to run Windows apps.

Major features include support for Unicode bracketing pairs, experimental support for geographical information, better Internet cookie support, AudioQueue is now used for the Mac OS X CoreAudio driver instead of AUHAL, as well as several bug fixes.

When compared with the previous release, Wine 1.7.22 introduces a total of 68 changes. Among these, we can mention that the "Open File" from photo menu action has been repaired for versions 2.x and 3.x of the Picasa software, ShowWindow will no longer generate a WM_PAINT message, and Wild Earth: Photo Safari Demo no longer freezes.

The Safari web browser will now load secure URLs, Planetside will no longer crash on the character selection screen, Hapedit will now launch a web browser, and all the games that were wrapped with the Tages Protection 5.x DRM scheme are now working.

Furthermore, version 3.1.2 of the Safari web browser no longer crashes when the user click on a tab, the DVD version of Riven now starts properly, Defense Grid, the Awakening loads correctly, Sketchup 7 no longer has a blank working area, and some IMGBurn 2.5.0.0 issues have been repaired.

The trial version of the FPS Creator application no longer crashes on startup, an issue that made REDCINE 20.0.0 to silently exit during startup has been fixed, Google SketchUp 8 no longer crashes when the users uses the Phototextures feature, and PDF Password Cracker 3.2 Enterprise no longer causes page faults.

Moreover, Wine 1.7.22 fixes some serious issues with the Picasa 3.8 software under the Fedora 15 Linux operating system, repairs some random hangs in the progeCAD 10.x installer, fixes some Rift crashes, as well as various crashes with the Avast! Free Antivirus 9.0.2013 and Planetside 2 0.608.21.21306 apps.

Last but not least, MediaGet 1.12.x no longer crashes when a new download job is started, Google Sketchup 8.0.4811 is now fully functional, Edcast 3.1.21, Call to Power 1.2, Lingea Lexicon 5 and Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition (Steam) no longer crash on startup.

As usual, you can download Wine 1.7.22 right now from Softpedia. However, keep in mind that this is an unstable release and it should not be installed on production machines, as it is intended for testing purposes only. More details can be found in the official changelog.
