Ubuntu Touch on Meizu phones is a certainty

The Ubuntu Touch operating system is almost ready and soon we'll start seeing various devices running it. Until that happens, we only have some leaked images to talk about, like the one that landed today.

Meizu is one of the two companies that will definitely release one of their phones with Ubuntu Touch. The date for that event is not known, but it should be a few months’ time.

At least, this is what we have been led to believe after Canonical and Meizu signed a partnership a couple of weeks ago. They said Q1 is the potential launch timeframe, so we should start seeing more leaks in the near future.

It's not really a surprise that the image shows a Meizu MX 4 phone, which is actually one of their best products. The operating system will run best on top-of-the-line devices, but it should also perform admirably for medium range phones.

The test bed for Ubuntu Touch is Nexus 4, which is almost two years old and the OS runs very well on that. Just imagine how much better Ubuntu Touch will fare on a more powerful platform. The leaked image has been posted on gsmarena.com, but there is no additional information about it.

Ubuntu Touch will soon be based on Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet)

The RTM version of Ubuntu Touch is almost complete and the manufacturer will have to test it further, but the devs from Canonical also have to think further ahead and they also have a branch based on Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet), which is almost ready for its first release.

"We are close to having the necessary test results for our first vivid promotion. Dave from QA was performing sanity testing of image #39 - our current promotion candidate - on all of our supported platforms and soon will provide us with a full result. So far it seems all platforms besides manta are green so far (i.e. mako, krillin, flo, emulator)."

"For now we concentrate on image #39 even though we have more recent vivid images built. There seem to be some issues with MMS and multimedia playback in the latest images that are still being investigated. Since this can take a while, we decided to pick up a slightly earlier image instead. Once sanity testing passes for all platforms and QA gives a +1 on image promotion, we will most probably promote it to the devel channel. Expect this to happen pretty soon," said Canonical's  Łukasz Zemczak.

We asked Meizu about this picture and maybe we'll have something more for you soon. You can also take a closer look at our article about Ubuntu Touch RTM Update 10, which is now the most advanced and stable version available.
