BioShock Infinite, an FPS developed by Irrational Games and published by 2K Games, might be getting a Linux release very soon. This has been revealed by the entry on the Steam database.

BioShock Infinite is considered the best game in the series and is one of the most acclaimed titles launched in 2013. It featured a very interesting storyline and it was brought to life by one of the characters in the game, Elizabeth.

The studio was praised for implementing a very "human" interaction between the main character and Elizabeth, which made all the difference for this title.

2K Games is the only major publisher seriously supporting the Linux platform and it has already brought a number of the titles in its catalog to the open source platform, like the Borderlands series, the Civilization series, and even the latest XCOM. It was just a matter of time until some of the other titles would also get the same treatment.

BioShock Infinite on Linux, what's next? GTA V?

BioShock Infinite is a game developed on the Unreal 3 engine and it was already ported for the Linux OS. Still, it's a DirectX 11-only title, so it's likely that the guys at Aspyr Media will probably have some problems with the porting process. For example, the latest Civilization: Beyond Earth is also a DirectX 11-only game and they are already having some issues. They are not insurmountable, but they require a lot of work.

"Indebted to the wrong people, with his life on the line, veteran of the U.S. Cavalry and now hired gun, Booker DeWitt has only one opportunity to wipe his slate clean. He must rescue Elizabeth, a mysterious girl imprisoned since childhood and locked up in the flying city of Columbia. Forced to trust one another, Booker and Elizabeth form a powerful bond during their daring escape."

"Together, they learn to harness an expanding arsenal of weapons and abilities, as they fight on zeppelins in the clouds, along high-speed Sky-Lines, and down in the streets of Columbia, all while surviving the threats of the air-city and uncovering its dark secret," reads the Steam entry.

The information about the Linux version is taken from the Steam database, and by no means is it completely certain. The Steam Database is a record of data describing every Steam game and subscription provided by Valve for the Steam service. Usually, the new entries are first visible in the Steam Database before their official launch and they should be released on all the supported platforms at once, but there is no guarantee that they will actually happen.

We'll get back to you when we'll have more official info about the game.
