August 20th, 2004. The Linux Business Directory, the free and open directory of Linux and Free Source / Open Source based businesses and organizations has added over 200 new categories for organizations to use to describe themselves. This now brings the total number of categories available to our users to over 550!

Among the new categories added are new hardware items such as wireless, point of sale and inventory, firewalls, and VPN's. Amongst the software categories are all major database categories such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, and Ingres, as well as networking services, desktop environments and office applications, enterprise software suites, and many more. The goal of these additions is to expand the depth and breadth of the organizations that can be categorized and searched in the directory and to better reflect new technologies and open source projects that have been created and discovered in recent months.

The site (TLBD for short) is created, maintained, and hosted by Deronyan, a small firm focusing on "Bringing Business to Linux". TLBD has been active since late April of this year and has had moderate success at obtaining members. "As Linux moves more and more into the daily operations of organizations, it becomes more mainstream. As this happens, organizations need a way to find vendors for sales, support and other services to address their hardware, software, customizations, and other IT needs. That's what The Linux Business Directory is about, and these new categories help us get closer to better addressing these needs." said Alan Snyder, the founder and President of Deronyan.

He continued, "There's never been a better time to join TLBD than now. It's completely free, as in beer, does not require a blood-sucking user id registration and password to submit your organization, and still comes with a whole bunch of free services (registration is required for some of these features) like your own company/organization's wiki, free forum support, free press release services, free community blog, free events calendar, free FAQ's and links to other great Linux/FOSS resource sites and more."
