The Linux fans of Sid Meier’s Civilization: Beyond Earth now have something to be glad about because the developers have just announced that AMD and Intel video cards are once more supported and that game should be made available in just a few days.

Aspyr Media has been keeping the community informed about their progress with the Linux port of Sid Meier’s Civilization: Beyond Earth and it looks like they managed to solve all the major problems, including the AMD (Radeon) and Intel support, which was almost ditched because of a few problematic bugs. Now, those problems are gone and most of the work has been completed. So much so that we might get to see the final version next week.

The game has already been released for the Windows platform to critical acclaim, and it's probably the best one in the series. It doesn't really matter that the Mac OS X and Linux versions of the Sid Meier’s Civilization: Beyond Earth arrive a little bit later, but this is a native port and users should be happy to see such an important title promoted for the open source platform.

Civilization: Beyond Earth on Linux is an important milestone

One of the things that users must remember is that the game is a port from the Windows version which, in turn, is a DirectX 11 title. The fact that Aspyr Media managed to port the engine and the rest of the components with relative ease gives us hope that other games from the 2K portfolio might make their way to the Linux platform as well.

"Fortunately, our partners at AMD and Intel are totally awesome, and with their help, we’ve managed to greatly improve the gameplay experience on those chipsets. They were able to spot a setting in our code base that behaves completely differently on Linux vs Mac, and magically several of our worst bugs disappeared. While we still have a ways to go before we are officially supporting both chipsets, we can confidently say that both are in a very playable state, and official support will be rolled in ASAP."

"A big, big shout out to the guys at AMD and Intel for helping us here, and we look forward to working with them even more closely in the future. We have now submitted the Linux version of Civilization: Beyond Earth to all parties for approval! Assuming all goes well, Linux users will be colonizing new planets just in time for Christmas (possibly as soon as next week)," reads the blog from Aspyr Media.

So that's pretty much it. The devs are saying that Civilization: Beyond Earth should arrive on Linux sometime next week, at the earliest, probably on Steam, Game Agent, and other channels.
