The final version of Ubuntu Touch is getting closer

Canonical has just promoted a new Ubuntu Touch RTM version of its operating system and it's moving even closer to the final build that should be ready in time for the February 2015 release.

It's been rather quiet on the Ubuntu Touch RTM front, but the developers did manage to bring more fixes and to implement an important change. The Ubuntu team has been focusing on the new Ubuntu Touch based on the Vivid Vervet branch. This is where all the new features will be pushed from now on and it should become the most advanced release in just a couple of months.

On the other hand, Ubuntu Touch RTM is the most stable version right now and it packs pretty much all you might want from a mobile OS. The Ubuntu Store is also pretty solid, but it's likely that more apps will start to land once the system gets in users' hands with the new Aquaris phones.

It's been quite a journey for Canonical until now. They announced the new OS just a couple of years ago and they managed to finish it. You might think that it took them a long time, but you have to keep in mind that they are also working on a convergence plan that would essentially unify the mobile and desktop experiences and code base.

"We have promoted a new ubuntu-rtm image! QA tested images #184 krillin, #154 mako, #148 emulator and gave it green light for promotion. Image #12 is therefore our new stable image for this milestone. It's a great way to end the year indeed. This image mostly has critical fixes for bugs that were found in the previous images, but it also contains a re-designed manage-dash view - as seen in vivid already. We advise all users that wish to have stable systems to use our ubuntu-touch/stable channel."

"One irritating issue has been reported for #12 regarding a certain case in the gallery-app, but besides that things seem to look really good. Big thanks go to all developers an QA engineers that worked hard during this last milestone sprint and allowed us to get a quality image," writes Canonical's Łukasz Zemczak.

The next Ubuntu Touch RTM milestone is expected to arrive on January 15, so users are more than welcome to test the latest version until that upgrade arrives. You will only need a working Nexus 4 device and the will to follow the instructions on the official wiki.
