Ubuntu users just have to upgrade their systems

It's easy to think that Ubuntu developers are usually working only on the next version of the operating systems, but they also put a lot of effort into the distros they already released. For example, an important Unity update has been unveiled now for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.

If you didn't know this already, Ubuntu is using a desktop environment called Unity, which is built by the same developers who also make the OS. The current state of the Unity DE hasn't changed much in terms of the visual aspect, but that doesn't mean that it's not updated regularly and that problems and bugs are not fixed.

Unity has been around for some time, but that's not a guarantee that it's bug free. In fact, the Ubuntu community finds issues all the time and it's Canonical's job to fix them as soon as possible. The priority is usually set by the Ubuntu devs. Now we have a new important Unity update for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and it's quite a big one.

Unity gets important fixes on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

Different Ubuntu versions use different Unity versions. This is not something that should really concern regular users and it's something that happens all the time. In fact, the fixes landing in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS for Unity are actually backported, which means they are already present in Ubuntu 14.10.

The developers have explained that "the lockscreen password between screens is now preserved, an arrow activator has been added in the lockscreen, the exposed open windows are displayed in the preserved order, support has been implemented for getting the distro name from /etc/os-release, and the Launcher icon count badge width has been refined."

These are just a few of the fixes you'll find in the new Unity update. Users don't need to do anything special in order to get new Unity version, just upgrade their systems.
