Evolve OS, a new Linux distribution built from scratch that's using a fresh desktop environment called Budgie, has been upgraded to version Beta 1 and is now ready for testing.

The Evolve OS distribution has been in the works for quite some time and the developers have been working to improve the previous Alpha releases. They've made some very interesting changes and the OS seems to be a lot more stable. We don't get to see good distros that manage to get it right from the start, but Evolve OS has the potential to provide us with a nice surprise.

It's worth mentioning that the operating system is using Budgie, which is a new desktop environment built by the same team. Users will see that it's actually quite GNOME-friendly and installing GNOME apps is possible, and that is always good news.

Evolve OS is evolving quite nicely

The previous Alpha in the series looked pretty good and it was already interesting, but the developers have improved upon it quite a great deal, and after testing the Beta release, we can easily say that the distribution has evolved quite a lot.

"Evolve OS now features a preliminary version of evolve-sc, the Evolve OS Software Center. It’s aim is to simplify the updating and installation of software, providing a simple interface to get the job done. Budgie Desktop is currently in sync with our latest development version, and is now built upon the GNOME 3.14.2 stack," reads the official announcement.

The developers have also explained that most of the regular packages have been implemented, like Totem or Rhythmbox. There is even a Software Center available and more apps can be installed from there in just a few minutes.

You can download Evolve OS Beta 1 and give it a spin if you are curious about the new operating system. Remember that this is a development version and it should not be installed on production machines.
