PPSSPP is a powerful PSP emulator that is capable of running games for that platform and enhance the original experience with a series of features that are only available for PC users.

It's hard to place PPSSPP in a safe category because this is something that might be illegal in some countries. It remains to be disputed whether it's still illegal to buy a game for the PSP and then play said game on your PC, but it's a scenario. In any case, the application works almost flawlessly and it presents its users with more options than you might think possible.

It would have been a lot easier to just provide a platform to emulate PSP games in their natural resolution, but they would have looked terrible on a PC display, no matter the operating system. The devs made sure that users had enough options and features to make sure that will not happen, like antialiasing for example, which makes everything bearable.

PPSSPP 1.0 is finally here

The development of PPSSPP has been going on for a long time, but the application was already usable for quite some time. It's possible to play PSP games with enhanced graphics, but the 1.0 version is not the one that made it happen.

The developers have explained that it's now possible to create configs for each game, JIT (just-in-time compilation) has received a large amount of fixes, FPU rounding modes are now supported, JIT now makes use of SSE on x86 architectures, which greatly increase performance, FFMpeg has been upgraded, the UMD speed is now much better simulated, an SDL2 version of PPSSPP is now available, and a lot of other fixes have been implemented.

You can download the source package for PPSSPP 1.0 from Softpedia, but it's recommended that you use one of the repos provided by the developers, which will keep you updated.
