The first Release Candidate (RC) version of the forthcoming Tails 1.3 amnesic incognito live system has been officially released for testing, bringing three major new features and four minor improvements that are described for your reading pleasure in the next paragraphs.

According to the official changelog, Tails 1.3 RC1 is now distributed again as a hybrid ISO image that can be deployed to either DVD discs or USB thumb drives without the need to manually run the ‘isohybrid’ command. In addition, it now uses AppArmor to confine the TOR Browser Bundle web browser based on Tor and Mozilla Firefox, protecting users against various attacks.

Another interesting feature is the addition of the Electrum bitcoin client/wallet, which integrates a persistent mode. Among the minor improvements, we can mention that Tails 1.3 RC1 now offers support for obfs4 (obfuscation protocol) Tor bridges, improves support for OpenPGP smart cards, introduces various touchpad enhancements (2-fingers scrolling, tap-to-click, disable while typing), and supports Vietnamese input in IBus.

To test the distribution right now, download Tails 1.3 RC1 ISO image from Softpedia, write it to either a blank DVD disc or a USB flash drive of 1GB or higher capacity, then boot it from the BIOS of your PC. Keep in mind that this is an unstable release and it should not be deployed on production machines. Also, it includes software packages optimized only for 32-bit (i386) CPU architectures.
