A new update has been promoted by the Ubuntu devs

The Ubuntu Touch OS from Canonical has been upgraded once again and a new RTM version has been released. The system is now more stable and users should be able to detect some noticeable improvements for UI responsiveness and some other changes.

Canonical has been working on this operating system for more than two years and it's really showing. They have started with a simple mockup that didn't have almost any working parts, with the exception of the Gallery app and a couple of others, and now they boast with the fact that most of the apps are native and it provides a unique experience.

When you start a new operating system almost from scratch, you can only go up. That means the performance of Ubuntu Touch on the Nexus 4 reference device has been getting smoother and better with new iteration. For now, Canonical is still sticking with the RTM branch, which is the most advanced and stable version they have to offer.

Ubuntu for phones works like a charm on a two-year-old phone

There are some slowdowns, but they are minimal. That's to be expected when you consider that the OS runs on a phone that was made available back in October 2012. It's a great reference device, but it has started to show its age. Any new phones, with the hardware equivalent of today's devices, will see a much better experience.

"We have promoted a new ubuntu-rtm image today! Krillin image #241 (and its mako and generic_x86 counterparts) has passed all QA tests with only a few new non-blocking bugs. This image has been now copied over to the RC channel (ubuntu-touch/rc/bq-aquaris.en - also has non-aquaris images). Those of you that are using the stable channel - no worries: this image will migrate to this channel somewhere next week. There are still some tests that need to be done before we can copy essentially our first official OTA update into stable," wrote the developers on the official mailing list.

For now, only Nexus 4 and BQ Aquaris devices are supported and it's the only way to get all the latest updates for the OS.
