The Evolve OS development team, through Ikey Doherty, had the pleasure of announcing earlier today the immediate availability for download and testing of a new Beta release for the upcoming Evolve OS Linux distributions. Evolve OS Beta 1.1 is now powered by Linux kernel 3.19.1 and systemd 218. In addition, this new Beta release of Evolve OS includes the GCC 4.9.2 and Clang/LLVM 3.5.0 compilers.

It appears that very few changes have been implemented in Evolve OS Beta 1.1, which aims to be a quick bugfix update to the initial Beta release, which was announced at the end of January 2015. Evolve OS uses a unique, one of a kind desktop environment called Budgie, which was adopted by a few other distributions as well. Many of Evolve OS’ packages have been compiled with the Clang compiler by default in this Beta, in order to make the OS eat less RAM.

“The Evolve OS team is pleased to announce the immediate availability of Evolve OS Beta 1.1. This release focused on stability and bringing the core systems up to scratch. Please note that as this is an update to Evolve OS Beta 1 (Quality Cycle), changes that are intended for beta2 will not be present (such as UEFI support). Also note Evolve OS is only available as a 64-bit system,” says Ikey Doherty in the official announcement.

The ISO image is now bootable from USB 3.0

As users complained that they can’t boot the Evolve OS Beta 1 ISO image from USB 3.0, the development team resolved the issue in today’s Beta 1.1 release. Moreover, numerous bugs found in the Budgie desktop environment have been fixed, passwords are no longer required when using Evolve OS, complete multimedia key support has been added, VLC Media Player has been installed and includes full codec support, and the Software Center has been re-organized to display more hidden packages.

You can download Evolve OS Beta 1.1 right now from Softpedia, but please keep in mind that it is a very unstable operating system that should not be installed on production machines where stability is a must. It is intended for testing purposes only. Evolve OS is a Linux kernel-based OS built from scratch (not based on any existing GNU/Linux operating system). This Beta is distributed as a Live DVD ISO image only for 64-bit computer platforms.
