The makers of this tablet are still taking pre-orders

UbuTab is a tablet supposedly built to take advantage of both Android and Ubuntu Touch operating systems and promises some great hardware components. The tablets should start shipping mid-April, but there is a problem. Ubuntu developers have no knowledge about the possible implementation of Ubuntu Touch on the tablet.

UbuTab was first announced a few months ago and it didn't get any real traction, mostly because some of the hardware components seemed to be a little too far fetched, and the project looked more like a concept than anything else. The devices are supposedly built and sold by Nikki Wertish, which is unknown in this business.

The problems don't end here. Nikki Wertish also went to Indiegogo and started a crowdfunding campaign, which didn't reach its mark. If you pay close attention to the campaign you might notice that it has flexible funding, which means that it received the money even if it didn't reach the proposed goal. After the campaign had ended, the ubutabshop.com was launched, and users can preorder a selection of tablets from there.

Alarms bells are ringing

A number of things got the community suspicious, like the statement that one of the tablets will ship with a spinning  1TB drive, which is weird to say the least. There are no actual images of the device, just some concept shots, not to mention that there isn't a video with it in action.

To top it all off, the Ubuntu developers have no knowledge about this device and its Ubuntu Touch implementation. I spoke with both Alan Pope, and Michael Hall from Canonical and they both confirmed that don't know anything about it. Even more, Alan Pope said that Ubuntu Touch is still pretty far off, from a technical point of view, from being a project that you can just pick up and install on any tablet.

Nikki Wertish is saying that the tablets should start shipping mid-April, but users should be very careful about placing pre-orders on devices that no one has seen.

UbuTab features a 10.1" IPS Screen with 1920x1200 resolution, an ARM Cortex-A9 Quad-Core 1.6GHz CPU, a Mali400MP4 Quad-Core GPU with Open GL ES 2.0 support, 2GB of RAM, a choice between 1TB or 2TB of internal storage, and 6 hours of battery life with an 11,000mAh battery.
