KDE announced the immediate availability of KDE Frameworks 5.9.0, a collection of over 60 add-on libraries for the Qt 5.x GUI toolkit that can be used by KDE developers to create applications and core components for the famous KDE Plasma 5 desktop environment.

According to the release notes, KDE Frameworks 5.9.0 brings a number of fixes and improvements to many of its components, including KActivities, KArchive, KBookmarks, KCMUtils, KConfig, KI18n, KIconThemes, KIO, KItemModels, KJobWidgets, and KNotifications.

In addition, the KPeople, KPty, KTextEditor, KWidgetsAddons, KWindowSystem, KXmlGui, KXmlRpcClient, Plasma framework, Buildsystem changes, Frameworkintegration, and Solid components have been updated as well with several bugfixes.

"KDE today announces the release of KDE Frameworks 5.9.0," was stated in the official release announcement. "This release is part of a series of planned monthly releases making improvements available to developers in a quick and predictable manner."

Highlights of KDE Frameworks 5.9.0

Prominent features of KDE Frameworks 5.9.0 include a new module called ModemManagerQt, a Qt wrapper for the ModemManager API, a plugin that can be used to register events for notifications from KRecentDocument, Qt 5.5 support for KBookmarks, and smoother animations for KMessageWidget.

A dummy Wayland implementation has been added for KWindowSystemPrivate, as well as support for refreshing the battery properties when resuming and forgetting a resource implementation for KActivities, while the KTextEditor syntax received support for binary integer literals in the PHP highlighting file.

The Plasma framework received some improvements as well, such as a fix for issues with stray tooltips, smoother animations for PageStack and TabGroup via Animators, and an issue with the TabBar, as it was not correctly laid out on initial input.

Those who upgrade to KDE Framework 5.9.0 should keep in mind that a patch is required for version 5.2.x of Plasma-NM (Plasma NetworkManager), in order to build and work with ModemManagerQt. As an alternative, you can upgrade to Plasma-NM 5.3 Beta and ModemManagerQt 5.9.0.
