Robolinux, an easy-to-use Linux distribution based on Debian that features various flavors and that allows its users to run Windows apps via a virtual machine solution, has been upgraded to version 7.9.1 and is now ready for download.

Even if Robolinux started its life by promising users that it allows them to run any kind of Windows app without the need of a compatibility layers such as Wine, the developers have since implemented many more features and they have also built a few other flavors that complement the original GNOME edition.

Their solution for running Windows apps is called Stealth VM and basically built a separate virtual machine by using an original Windows installation disk. The result is that Windows app will run in a Linux system, but there is a performance penalty as you would expect. It's not an ideal system, but it's alternative to Wine. The main advantage over Wine is that it doesn't need major configuration and it should run most if not any app.

Now, the makers of Robolinux are also saying that they've implemented a large number of security and privacy related apps, gathered under name of The Invisible Internet Project (I2P). As always, a number of the core packages have been upgraded as well.

All the Robolinux flavors have been upgraded

Robolinux comes in three different flavors and they all need to be upgraded. The desktop environments have remained pretty much the same, but that was to be expected. On the other hand, components such as the Linux kernel have been upgraded.

"For the last three months Robolinux has been building an arsenal of privacy and security applications into all eight of its operating systems. These new versions are a direct result of our Users asking for more privacy and security apps. Robolinux Version 7.9.1 also added rcconf which allows you to remove any unecessary memory resident services from running when you boot up Robolinux. The result is Linux will run even faster. In addition Version 7.9.1 also has the newest VirtualBox 4.3.26 & Firefox 37.0.1 as well as a new upstream kernel and all security updates," reads the official announcement.

More details about the Stealth VM Software and Robolinux can be found in the official changelog. Moreover, you can download Robolinux GNOME 7.9.1 right now from Softpedia for both 32-bit and 64-bit architectures, along with the KDE, LXDE, and Xfce flavors.
