The Chinese maker has posted something on Twitter

Meizu might launch MX4 Ubuntu Edition on May 18, if the teaser posted by the Chinese company on Twitter is to be believed and if all the chatter on Chinese news websites will prove to be accurate.

The two companies that have confirmed to launch Ubuntu phones until now are Meizu and BQ. The latter one, the Spanish BQ company has already released the Aquaris 4.5 Ubuntu Edition phone for a while now, but Meizu hasn't made any kind of statement and hasn't proposed a launch date. In fact, with the exception of a few sparse apparitions during conventions, Meizu MX4 with Ubuntu has yet to surface.

Unlike the BQ phone, MX4 is considered to be a high-end device with much better specifications. A lot of potential Ubuntu users are awaiting this device to see how it will handle the mobile operating system from Canonical, which hasn't been tested on such hardware until now.

May 18 is just a rumor

The Chinese blogs are buzzing with information that this will be an Ubuntu-related announcement, but there is no actual proof that this is going to happen. Just as well, Meizu could announce the arrival of Android 5 Lollypop on their platforms or some other device, so it's not a safe bet.

The good news is that Mark Shuttleworth recently said that Meizu won't sell the phone only in China and that they are going to hit a larger market. From our conversations with Meizu, we deduced that more territories will be covered, although they wouldn't want to say exactly which one. They insist it's an international release, but didn't want to use the word global.

In any case, if Meizu does announce the launch of a new Ubuntu phone, we are heading towards some interesting times, and the competition on the mobile market is just starting to heat up.
