With a one-day delay, the forth Release Candidate (RC) version of the upcoming Linux kernel 4.1 was announced on Monday, May 18, by Linus Torvalds.

The RC4 release of Linux kernel 4.1 is getting us closer and closer to the final version, which should arrive sometime in summer 2015. According to Linus Torvalds, Linux kernel 4.1 RC4 is a little bit bigger than previous Release Candidate versions.

It includes mostly networking improvements and updated drivers. However, Linux kernel 4.1 Release Candidate 4 brings various changes to several architectures, including ARM, ARM64, and MIPS, as well as enhancements to the Btrfs and NFS filesystems.

"So this missed my normal Sunday release, because I was out most of the day yesterday," says Linus Torvalds. "Plus there was a suspend regression that looked like it had a patch imminent, so I didn't bother making one late in the evening, hoping for one more fix."

All those who wish to test this release should download Linux kernel 4.1 RC4 right now from the kernel.org website or via Softpedia. When testing, please keep in mind that this is a pre-release version of Linux kernel 4.1. Thus, it is not recommended for production machines.
