If you've been reading the news lately, you might know that the SourceForge project hosting website has been accused of hijacking open-source software that was abandoned by its maintainers or did not have some activity for an extended period of time.

The case of the GIMP for Windows project hosted at SourceForge being hijacked was the first and biggest example discussed in the last couple of weeks by the Open Source community, people who don't seem to agree with SourceForge's latest policies. Now, the developers behind Wine, which is another major open-source project, plan on migrating away from the popular project hosting website, as they have announced in their latest weekly report.

"Given SourceForge's recent activities with taking over open source projects for their own gain, I propose that we migrate away from SourceForge. The main uses for SourceForge is for mirroring tarballs, wine-gecko/wine-mono installers, and the wine-gecko git repository," says Austin. As such, the Wine team has confirmed their plans to migrate the project away from SourceForge, "So far there was mostly (or only) positive feedback to that suggestion and planning seems to be in progress."

It remains to be seen where the Wine project will be hosted, as its developers will most probably report the progress of migrating from SourceForge in their next weekly newsletter. We will keep you updated once we have further information.
