After three weeks since the release of Unreal Engine 4.8, Epic Games has announced the immediate availability for download of the first maintenance release, Unreal Engine 4.8.1, which fixes over 30 bugs that were present in the previous version.

Unreal Engine 4.8.1 repairs a crash in the editor that occurred when saving your work but there's no editor startup map set, fixes a crash in the garbage collection functionality, and adds a workaround for a crash in UGameInstance::StartGameInstance.

Multiple UMapProperty crashes were patched in the 4.8.1 hotfix release of Unreal Engine as well, and a fix for "divide by zero" when attempting to import animations that have zero (0) lenght has also been offered, along with a fix for playback issues with the Elemental Demo, and a fix for Indirect Lighting Cache on PlayStation 4 (PS4).

Moreover, a crash that occurred when attempting to terminate a Matinee camera animation has been patched, another crash that occurred when undoing TMap UProperties has been fixed, and the CPU usage is now correctly controlled when running the editor in the background on Linux kernel-based operating systems.

Hot reloading now works on Linux

In addition to the numerous fixes mentioned above, the first maintenance release of Unreal Engine 4.8 brings support for opening BP projects for shipping config on Xbox, hot reloading for GNU/Linux operating system, packaging improvements, as well as support for reimporting sprite sheets in converted projects.

Numerous other issues have been fixed in this release, so we recommend reading the entire changelog attached below if you're curious to see what's new. In the meantime, you can download Unreal Engine 4.8.1 for Linux, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows operating systems right now from the project's website.
