Béla Markus has announced the immediate availability of piCore 6.1, a special edition of the Tiny Core Linux operating system specifically designed for the Raspberry Pi single-board computer (SBC).

Powered by Linux kernel 3.18.10 LTS, Tiny Core 6.1 "piCore" comes with several updated core components, including e2fsprogs 1.42.13, util-linux 2.26.2, and BusyBox 1.23.2, as well as an intensively updated tcz repository.

"Team Tiny Core is pleased to announce the immediate availability of piCore-6.1," says Béla Markus in the forum announcement. "Images with preinstalled SSH for headless operation and with GUI also available."

The new version of piCore comes with separate images for Raspberry Pi computer boards that have ARMv6 and ARMv7 processors, which are available for download on the project's website or via Softpedia.

Here's how to update from a previous piCore version

In the same announcement, users are being instructed on how to update their current piCore installation on a Raspberry Pi board without removing the SD card, a procedure that involves downloading either the piCore-6.1-boot.tar.gz or piCore-6.1_v7-boot.tar.gz archives, making a backup, and extracting their contents on a temporary folder.

Then, you will have to copy the files to the /mnt/mmcblk0p1 directory, overwriting the contents. Please note that your custom boot options will also be overwritten, so make sure that you write the configuration in the cmdline.txt file on config.txt again. Also, keep in mind NOT to reboot the board if you are using a Wi-Fi connection.

Furthermore, you will have to download the new tcz kernel module from the repository that matches the new Linux kernel version of piCore 6.1, and then reboot your Raspberry Pi. That's it! You've updated your Tiny Core Linux "piCore" operating system to version 6.1.
