The Solus project is moving very fast, and its developers have managed to push another release out the door, this time with a lot of fixes that have been spotted and repaired in a very short amount of time.

Solus is following a relatively strict schedule, and a stable edition should be landing in a couple of months if nothing out of the ordinary happens. It's interesting to notice that the devs are still making huge changes to the operating system, like an entirely new Linux kernel, among other things, but Solus is not your ordinary OS and it's doing things a little bit differently.

The fact that Solus adopts pretty much all of the new packages is a great "selling" point for the OS. Most developers are trying the safest routes, and that means that they won't even touch the bleeding-edge package. There aren't many distros out there that adopted Linux kernel 4.1.1 the day after its launch, and that says a lot about the kind of operating system you're installing.

What is Solus OS doing right now

Besides getting all the coolest toys implemented by default, like the latest Linux kernel 4.1.1, the developers have also worked to fix some of the outstanding issues that have been affecting the distribution.

According to the changelog, VPN support has been added with the addition of openconnect in the repositories, NetworkManager 1.0.2 has been implemented by default, a number of hostname changes have been added, a few small UEFI problems inside the installer have been fixed, various kernel changes for hardware have been implemented, and the Beta label has been dropped.

You can download the Solus operating system from Softpedia and give it a go. The Live CD works very well, either on a real PC or in virtual environment, and it's really easy to install. It's not a stable version, so don't go using a production machine for this one, just yet.
