On July 27, Arne Exton, the creator of several Linux kernel-based operating systems, had the pleasure of informing us about the immediate availability for download of a new build of his Exton|OS Light distribution.

Being based on Canonical's Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet) operating system, Exton|OS Light Build 150727 replaces version 150202 and is powered by Arne Exton's Linux custom kernel 4.0.0-4-exton package, which is based on the upstream Linux 4.0.7 kernel.

"I’ve made a new extra version of Exton|OS based on Ubuntu 15.04 (alias Vivid Vervet) 64 bit with only a minimum of packages pre-installed," says Arne Exton. "Exton|OS Light’s Window manager Openbox guarantees lightness and elegance."

The Light edition of Exton|OS comes with the lightweight and very fast Openbox window manager. However, the distribution borrows elements from other lightweight desktop environments, such as LXDE's LXTerminal terminal emulator.

Among other applications included in Exton|OS Light, we can mention the PCManFM file manager, Synaptic Package Manager, Gparted partition editor, NetworkManager network connection manager, as well as Chromium web browser.

Arne Exton tried to keep the number of installed packages to a minimum, but if you want to install more apps, you can do so by using the pre-installed Synaptic Package Manager. The distribution is fully compatible with Ubuntu 15.04's software repositories.

The Live DVD comes with a persistent mode

Exton|OS Light Build 150727 is distributed as a Live DVD ISO image, which was designed from the ground up to allow users to install packages and store their configurations and personal settings, but only if booting from a USB flash drive.

The feature is called persistent mode and it lets you run the entire OS directly from the bootable medium, without having to install anything on your computer's disk drive. Download Exton|OS Light Build 150727 right now from Softpedia.
