The release of the software is now a stretch goal

The makers of Mycroft, a device based on Raspberry Pi 2 that is governed by an AI and is capable of making your house a smart one, have just announced that they plan to release the voice recognition software to help users control their desktops.

One of the things that most people noticed with Mycroft Kickstarter project was the voice recognition capabilities of the device. Raspberry Pi 2 is powerful, but nowhere near as powerful as regular desktops, so the fact that it could easily recognize voice commands and execute them is a big plus.

Its makers have understood this and they know other projects could use this kind of software for regular computers. The Mycroft team added a stretch goal of their project to release the software that enables the control of the desktop.

Unity integration will be the first one

The Mycroft developers have already spoken with the Ubuntu team, and they will ensure that the software will work just fine with Unity. Support for desktop environments will arrive at a later date.

“If our campaign reaches $125k we will release Mycroft software to control your Linux desktop. This will enable you to launch applications, control media, and change settings with just your voice. We talked to the Ubuntu team, and with their help we will ensure it is easy to enable Mycroft and use it through Unity,” said Ryan Sipes, the leader of the Mycroft project on the official blog.

This is an incentive for Linux user to contribute to the Mycroft Kickstarter, even if they don't want to get the actual units for their homes. Mycroft needs your help to become a reality, and the Linux community could use a powerful and reliable voice recognition software.

There are some solutions available out there, but not of them really got off the ground, making Mycroft the best chance for this kind of software.
