Cheap Linux Laptops, Best Video Editors & More…

FOSS Week in Review

Before I start, a friendly reminder: You have until midnight tonight to submit a presentation to the Southern California Linux Expo SCALE 14X. The first-of-the-year Linux/FOSS show — on Jan. 21-24, 2016, at the Pasadena Convention Center — already has Cory Doctorow and Jon ‘maddog’ Hall lined up to speak (as well as our favorite FOSS funnyman, Bryan Lunduke), and if you want to join this list of esteemed speakers, sharpen that No. 2 and get cracking. Don’t make me check with your boss to make sure you’ve submitted…

Psst, want a cheap laptop? Philadelphia’s Nonprofit Technology Resources wants to save a pile of laptops from the scrapyard. So Ed Cummings, the president of the organization, said the organization is having a “Linux Laptop Pizza Party” on Saturday in the City of Brotherly Love, according to Juliana Reyes writing in Technical.ly.

Taking place on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 1524 Brandywine St. in Philly, the party will feature laptops for as cheap as $20 and the group will also be helping people install Linux on them. According to Reyes, the Nonprofit Technology Resources organization is still looking for volunteers to get laptops ready to use and donate.

“Lots of Linux hackers will be on hand to answer questions and help participants choose an older laptop and a Linux distro that will run well on it,” Cummings wrote in an email to Technical.ly.

And the best video editor award goes to… That Matt Hartley, he just can’t leave well enough alone. In a recent Datamation article, Hartley lines up the best Linux video editors and makes an interesting case for each one. He says there’s no perfect answer — duh! — but in his usual style of giving each one its due, he makes a case for each one at different skill levels.

My choice, of course, is Openshot, but I’m not a professional or anything. Your mileage may vary.

Cutting this one a little short today because I need to get ready to surf the tsunami of SCALE 14X presentations expected to be filed today by procrastinating presenters. If you’re one of them, get that proposal in. Now.
