14 DAY TRIAL // Barry Kauler, the father of Puppy Linux, one of the smallest and most lightweight GNU/Linux distributions ever created, on which numerous distros are based, has announced that Quirky Linux entered the "Werewolf" series of development.
The first release, Quirky 7.3, is based on the latest Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) computer operating system, and it was designed from the offset to be fully compatible with the default software repositories of Ubuntu Linux.
Of course, this means that users will be able to install any package from the upstream Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) repositories in Quirky 7.3, which is currently powered by Linux kernel 4.2.5.
However, one of the main attractions in the Quirky 7.3 Linux distribution is that the Live CD has been greatly improved with all sorts of tweaks to provide users with the ability to perform installations on removable or fixed drives.
Among these optimizations to the Live CD, we can mention zram compression, session saving, as well as fast bootup, all of which also apply to the "Frugal" installation mode. Moreover, Quirky 7.3 includes SeaMonkey 2.38 web browser and email client.
"Version 7.3 has major improvements to running from live-CD, with fast bootup, zram compression and session saving," says Barry Kauler. "These improvements also apply to the 'frugal' mode of installation. There have been numerous bug fixes and upgrades."
Available only for 64-bit platforms
As expected, Quirky 7.3 fixes some of those annoying issues that have been reported by users since the previous release of the operating system. You can download Quirky 7.3 right now from Softpedia.
Please note that the OS is distributed as a Live ISO image, a USB image, and a USFS archive. All of them contain software packages optimized only for 64-bit (amd64/x86_64) hardware architectures. More details can be found in the official release notes.
