The latest version of the kernel is now in the repos

The Solus operating system is moving along, and lots of upgrades are still being made every week. One of these upgrades involves pushing the latest version of the Linux kernel into the repositories so that users can test it properly.

If anything, Solus is almost like a bleeding-edge operating system that integrates all the latest packages. The developers have always been quick to add the latest Linux kernels, and it often happened for Solus to have the most advanced version even ahead of more famous distros like Arch Linux.

This kernel is not yet default in Solus, but it's not going to remain like that for much longer. If nothing terribly wrong is found while testing this version of the kernel, we will see it made available by default really soon.

Solus with Linux kernel 4.3

The Linux kernel upgrades are not usually all that important, or at least they don't seem that way. Even when you get a fresh branch installed, you will find that not much has changed. That's just an impression, and the latest 4.3 iteration is a good example of that.

"Linux Kernel 4.3 now in Solus - ready for testing by our unstable users All of our driver modules have been rebuilt (with Nvidia 304 + 340 being patched to support the new seq_ output changes). We've decided to leave the LTS branch, as frankly we need the new support in 4.3 (i.e. Skylake) as well as some of these interesting changes. (Plus the CVE patches are merged upstream now, and our tree looks cleaner again) Justin's box now boots 0.6s faster too, so much rejoicing all round," wrote Ikey Doherty, the leader of the Solus project.

You can download the latest Solus RC from Softpedia if you want to take it for a spin. It works just fine in a virtual environment and make sure that you don't use it on a production machine.
