By now all users of the Meizu MX4, BQ Aquaris E4.5, BQ Aquaris E5 HD, Nexus 4, and Nexus 7 devices should have received the new Ubuntu Touch OTA-8 software update, so the time has come for us to bring you up to speed with the latest developments.

Very early today, November 21, Canonical's Łukasz Zemczak sent his daily report about the work done by the Ubuntu Touch developers in preparation for the upcoming OTA-9 software update for Ubuntu Phones, which will land sometime next year, around the date of January 20.

According to Mr. Zemczak, the team managed to finally land the new bluez5 for next-generation Bluetooth support, which now lies in the rc-proposed channel for those who wish to give a try, as well as to create an image that serves as a starting point for the Ubuntu Touch OTA-9 update.

"After the landing got signed-off and published, we built an image to have a good test starting point. This release essentially opens up a whole new era in our bluetooth story," said Łukasz Zemczak. "Arale rc-proposed users should remember that there's currently a slight suspend issue with the new kernels being actively worked on."

New Unity 8, Unity Scopes Shell, Indicator Network, and UITK

However, it appears that the Ubuntu Touch team was quite busy on November 20, as some really good changes landed for Ubuntu Touch OTA-9, among which we can mention new versions of Unity 8, Unity Scopes Shell with Scope refresh improvements, Indicator Network, Address Book Server, Ofono, QtUbuntu, QtMir, and UITK (UI Toolkit).

In related news, we reported the other day that the Ubuntu Touch developers released a new version of the Ubuntu SDK (Software Development Kit) IDE, which has dropped support for Qt dependencies, making it much easier for aspiring devs to get started with developing apps for Ubuntu Phones.
