The GNOME developers have just released the fourth milestone towards the upcoming GNOME 3.20 desktop environment, as we reported the other day, which means that many of the core components and apps have received improvements and new features.

Gedit 3.19.3 has been released, and according to the internal changelog, attached at the end of the article for reference, it renames the .desktop file to "Text Editor." In other words, this is how Gedit will be known among GNU/Linux users in the near future, after the release of GNOME 3.20 on March 23, 2016.

Moreover, Gedit now uses the traditional menubar layout of the most popular desktop environments, such as Ubuntu's Unity or Xfce, requires the latest GSpell software for the spelling plugin, adds a new Windows WiX installer, and updates the CSS with the latest GTK+ changes.

Last but not least, various minor code improvements and bugfixes have been implemented in Gedit 3.19.3, along with updates for several language translations, among which we can mention Czech, German, Greek, Finnish, Hebrew, Lithuanian, Norwegian Bokmal, Russian, Slovak, Turkish, Vietnamese, and Thai.

Those of you interested in testing this development release of Gedit can jump on the GNOME 3.19.4 bandwagon, or download the Gedit 3.19.3 sources right now from our website. Please try to keep in mind, though, that this is a pre-release version, not suitable for production use.
