Only two days after the announcement of the first point release for the stable Wine 1.8 branch, today, February 5, the project's development team has published details about the third milestone towards the Wine 1.10 series.

Among the big new features implemented in Wine 1.9.3, we can mention the rebase of the Gecko engine on the latest Mozilla Firefox 44.0 web browser, JSON support in JavaScript, the addition of more write support in WebServices, along with extra Shader Model 4 instructions, and improvements to DirectWrite's line breaking.

But that's not all, as the release notes of Wine 1.9.3 show us that there are 24 bugfixes for some of the most important issues reported by users since the previous development snapshot, Wine 1.9.2, which was announced approximately two weeks ago.

More Windows apps and games work better with Wine

As one might expect from a new Wine release, no matter if it's a stable or a development one, there's better support for more Windows apps and games. And it looks like Wine 1.9.3 does not disappoint, bringing better support for the iNode 3.6, Lego Mindstorms EV3, IDEA 1.7, Dassault Systemes CATIA 5, and FoxitReader 5.1 apps.

Among the Windows games that have received improvements, we can mention Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas 2, Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II, Far Cry 3, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter Redux, When Monster Strikes, Starcraft, Poker Night, and Spurious.

There are also fixes for the Yahoo Messenger, BioEdit, Nikon Capture NX 2.4, VMWare, Internet Explorer, and LINE programs for Microsoft Windows systems. If you want to test this release, you can go ahead and download the sources of Wine 1.9.3 right now via Softpedia, just try to keep in mind that it's a pre-release version, not suitable for production use.
