Firefox downloads top 1m in just over four days

Over a million copies of the open source browser Firefox have been downloaded in a little over four days after the 1.0 preview release was put up on the web, according to information at the SpreadFirefox blog.

The developers of the browser, which is based on Mozilla, had hoped to reach trhe million-download figure in 10 days.

The new preview release features live bookmarks, strong encryption for passwords and improved compatiblity for users of Internet Explorer, among other features.

A host of bugs have also been fixed.

Versions for Windows, Linux and and Mac OS X have been released by the development team while versions for other operating systems such as Solaris, Sun's Java Desktop System, OS/2, BeOS and AIX have been contributed by others.
