The GNOME 3.20 desktop environment has just received its first point release, version 3.20.1, bringing numerous small improvements to various of the project's core components and apps.

Frederic Peters informs us today, April 14, about the release of GNOME 3.20.1, the first of two planned maintenance updates for the acclaimed desktop environment, which has just started showing up in the main software repositories of various rolling GNU/Linux distributions, including OpenSuSE Tumbleweed and Arch Linux.

As for Arch Linux, users of this Linux kernel-based operating system can already update their GNOME installations to today's officially announced 3.20.1 release as most of the desktop environment's components started appearing on the official channels in the last few days.

"Here comes our first update to GNOME 3.20, with many bug fixes, documentation and translation updates, and various improvements. We hope you'll enjoy it," said Frederic Peters. "Packages should shortly arrive in your distribution of choice, and if you want to compile GNOME 3.20.1 by yourself, you can use the jhbuild modulesets."

GNOME 3.20.2 coming May 11, 2016

If you're wondering what's new in the GNOME 3.20.1 update announced today, we can tell you that it contains only small improvements to the core apps and libraries updated as part of this first maintenance release. As such, we recommend taking a look at the core apps changelog and the core components changelog.

The GNOME 3.20 desktop environment will receive one more planned point release, version 3.20.2, which should see the light of day next month, on May 11, 2016. After that, most probably some of the project's core apps and components will receive further updates to versions like 3.20.3 or 3.20.4.

In the meantime, the GNOME development team will begin work on the next major release of the acclaimed desktop environment for GNU/Linux operating systems, GNOME 3.22, which will be dubbed "Karlsruhe" and should debut on September 21, 2016, if everything goes according the plan.
