VideoLAN released a new maintenance build for the stable 2.2 series of their popular, cross-platform, and open-source VLC Media Player software, version 2.2.3, for all supported platforms.

VLC Media Player 2.2.3 is now available for download and we've managed to get our hands on the internal changelog (attached at the end of the article for reference) so we can share with you what's new in this point release, what has been changed since VLC Media Player 2.2.2, which was announced in January 2016.

There are fifteen bug fixes in VLC 2.2.3, covering various areas of the software, including demuxing, decoding, video output, skins, Qt port, as well as Mac OS X and Windows fixes. Taking a closer look, we can notice that VLC Media Player 2.2.3 addresses a regression with the Windows Media Video (WMV) format.

The MKV tags support has been improved, a potential MKV (Matroska) infinite loop was fixed, along with a potential stack overflow for HTTP Live Streaming (HLS), whose quality selection should work again. The hardware decoding works with the libvdpau-va-gl library now, and the libass library is used without caching dialog.

Various crashes caused by the libvpx library were fixed as well, and it looks like the green lines the appeared on Direct3D output seem to no longer be present anymore. Moreover, it is now possible to maximize the main VLC window in multi-screen context, and the resume function works again for the Qt port of the software.

More Qt fixes, Mac OS X and Windows improvements

The list of changes continues with more fixes for the Qt version of VLC Media Player, such as an infinite recursion in the Customize dialog, size issues after displaying the resume toolbar, as well as when switching to or from the minimal interface. For Microsoft Windows users, VLC 2.2.3 lets them open more than 15 elements in Explorer.

Last but not least, VLC Media Player 2.2.3 correctly respects the disable-screensaver option on the Mac OS X platform, for which it addresses a crash the occurred in the Media Information panel. As usual, most of the language translations have been updated. Download VLC Media Player 2.2.3 for GNU/Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows.
