After announcing the availability of the KDE Applications 16.04.1 software suite, KDE today, May 10, 2016, also started seeding the fourth point release of the KDE Plasma 5.6 desktop environment to stable users.

KDE Plasma 5.6.4 is yet another small update in the development cycle of the latest and most advanced KDE Plasma 5 desktop environment, which has already been adopted by most of the KDE-based GNU/Linux operating systems, and according to the release notes it attempts to fix various bugs and annoyances reported by users.

Since KDE Plasma 5.6.3, which was announced approximately three weeks ago, the KDE devs managed to fix various bugs to the Plasma Workspace, Plasma SDK, Plasma Networkmanager, Plasma Desktop, KWin, KScreen, Info Center, Plasma Addons, Discover, Breeze Plymouth theme, kde-cli-tools, and libkscreen components.

"Today KDE releases a bugfix update to KDE Plasma 5, versioned 5.6.4. Plasma 5.6 was released in March with many feature refinements and new modules to complete the desktop experience," reads today's announcement. "This release adds a month's worth of new translations and fixes from KDE's contributors. The bugfixes are typically small but important."

KDE Plasma 5.7 launches on July 5, 2016

Now that the fourth maintenance release of the KDE Plasma 5.6 series is out, the KDE developers will have to address bugs for one more point release, KDE Plasma 5.6.5, which should be seeded to users next month, on June 14, 2016, along with the release of the KDE Applications 16.04.2 software suite.

In the meantime, the development cycle of the next major version, KDE Plasma 5.7, will start, and we will be able to test drive the Beta release on June 16, only two days after the release the last KDE Plasma 5.6 maintenance version. Then, the final KDE Plasma 5.7 desktop environment will hit the streets on July 5, 2016.
