14 DAY TRIAL // openSUSE Project's Douglas DeMaio today, May 11, 2016, informed the openSUSE Tumbleweed community about the latest GNU/Linux technologies that landed in the rolling release operating system.
It appears that two major snapshots have been released already during the first week of May, bringing various relatively new GNU/Linux technologies, such as the latest GNOME 3.20.1 desktop environment, Linux kernel 4.5.3 (the latest version is now Linux 4.5.4, released on May 11, 2016), as well as the Mozilla Firefox 46.0 web browser.
Those who use the KDE Plasma 5.6 desktop environment on top of their OpenSuSE Tumbleweed installations should know that the 5.6.3 update arrived, and it is now available in the main repositories (latest version is now KDE Plasma 5.6.4, released on May 10, 2016), along with updated Bluedevil 5 and Breeze components.
GCC 6 and Qt5 migration is coming in a month
Among other updated packages, we can mention Git 2.8.2, glib-networking 2.48.1, ostree 2016.5, as well as the latest HexChat and Samba versions. In the meantime, it looks like the openSUSE devs are still planning on migrating to the new GCC (GNU Compiler Collection) 6 compiler, as well as the latest Qt5 toolkit, which right now is in stand-by due to some unresolved issues.
"Plans for the new GNU Compiler Collection in a Tumbleweed snapshot is at least three to four weeks away because of a huge update stack that will be made when GCC 6 makes it into Tumbleweed," said Douglas DeMaio. "Pre-testing in private staging has shown that GCC 6 should build smoothly in the various stages that lead to a Tumbleweed snapshot, but that remains to be seen until a snapshot with GCC 6 is at the users’ fingertips."
All openSUSE Tumbleweed users are urged to update their systems as soon as possible to receive the new software updates mentioned above, and keep an eye open for Linux kernel 4.5.4, KDE Plasma 5.6.4, KDE Applications 16.04.1, GNOME 3.20.2, and other fresh GNU/Linux technologies released during the second week of May 2016.
