Today, May 18, openSUSE developer Douglas DeMaio has informed the community about the new features that are about to land in the software repositories of openSUSE Tumbleweed rolling GNU/Linux operating system.

We reported last week that the latest snapshots for OpenSuSE Tumbleweed introduced the KDE Plasma 5.6.3, Mozilla Firefox 46, and Linux kernel 4.5.3 updates. However, the fact of the matter is that they are already old versions, as KDE Plasma 5.6.4, Linux kernel 4.5.4, and Mozilla Firefox 46.0.1 had already been available on the market.

As part of the respective announcement, openSUSE Tumbleweed users were also promised the integration of the recently released Qt 5.6 GUI (Graphical User Interface) technology for the KDE Plasma desktop environment, along with an upcoming massive rebuild of the entire operating system based on the new GCC 6 compiler.

The wait is almost over

Well, today we have some pretty good news for our openSUSE Tumbleweed readers, as the next snapshot to be released for the rolling operating system will bring the long-anticipated Qt 5.6 integration, along with the latest KDE Plasma 5.6.4, KDE Applications 16.04.1, and KDE Frameworks 5.22.0 updates. These and much more should be included in a snapshot dated 20160517 or higher.

Best of all, openSUSE Tumbleweed users should also expect to get the brand new Linux 4.6 kernel, and for those who use the GNOME desktop environment, the recently announced GNOME 3.20.2 maintenance release just landed the other day along with Linux kernel 4.5.4, as part of snapshot 20160516. Additionally, it looks like the major Libzypp 16.0.0 update is now live.

All the upcoming GNU/Linux technologies mentioned above have already been checked into staging, so they should land in the stable channels for openSUSE Tumbleweed users very soon, most probably by the end of the week. In related news, we've been informed that the live installer is no longer part of the Tumbleweed live images. More details can be found in today's announcement.

Update: openSUSE Tumbleweed snapshot 20160517 has been released today, May 19, 2016, and includes the GNOME 3.20.2, Qt 5.6, Linux kernel 4.5.4, Mesa 11.2.2 3D Graphics Library, and many other important updates.
