Tech Writer Matt Hartley on Covering and Using Linux

The FOSS Force Video Interview

It would be difficult to find anyone who’s been hanging in FOSS circles for more than a week or two who isn’t familiar with FOSS media maven Matt Hartley. We thought we’d invite him along for a video interview to see what he’s really like.

Matt Hartley uses Linux, specifically Ubuntu, and writes for several online news outlets, including Datamation and a website he founded called Freedom Penguin, subtitled “Your Source for All Things Linux.” As Matt explains in the video, Freedom Penguin doesn’t compete with FOSS Force because the two sites have entirely different focuses. But that’s not why we wanted to talk with Matt. We wanted to ask (and did ask) how Linux and covering Linux have changed in the last decade. And he answered, most intelligently — and with a great sense of humor.

    Is that a Strat in the Viewers left hand side of the screen.

    Sadly no, it’s an old/broken Wi guitar. Too bad, really. My coolness points would have increased a bit had it been a Fender Strat.

    “Your Source for All Things Linuix.”

    What’s Linuix? Is that a new distro? 😉

    @Mike Well, damn. This certainly hasn’t been a good week for FOSS Force’s editor. I wonder what’s up with her.

    My emoticon disappeared, which makes my question look serious. :p

    @Mike No, your emoticon is in your previous comment. Your sense of humor came through. Evidently it’s my humor in my reply to you that looked serious?

    Hah, it’s my browser plugin: RequestPolicy

    Apparently my text-based emoticon got translated into a graphical emoji, which the plugin blocks.

    Cool – death to emoji!

    @Matt Hartley

    “Sadly no…”

    Oh too bad, I might have asked you to join my band, The Tracyannes… because every member is named Tracyanne
