Ubuntu MATE project leader Martin Wimpress informed us just a few moments ago about the availability of the MATE 1.14 desktop environment for the Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system.

The number one question asked by Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS users since the April 21 launch of the GNU/Linux distribution has been "When can I get MATE Desktop 1.14 for Ubuntu MATE 16.04?" Well, the wait is finally over, and the answer is now, right now.

After weeks of hard work, Martin Wimpress and his team of skilful Ubuntu MATE developers have managed to upgrade the MATE 1.12 desktop environment that shipped with Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) by default to the latest release.

They put together a PPA (Personal Package Archive) with the MATE 1.14.1 packages, so you can easily upgrade your installation, but also receive automatic updates for future maintenance versions of the MATE desktop environment.

"You might be wondering why it has taken 2 months to release this PPA? Here’s why; they’ve been well tested," said Martin Wimpress. "We also waited for the first MATE Desktop bugfix release, so what you are getting today is actually MATE Desktop 1.14.1."

Here's how to install MATE 1.14 right now on Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS

To install the MATE 1.14.1 desktop environment on your Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS distribution, you'll have to first add the PPA repository and then update the operating system by following the next instructions. Also, read the official blog announcement for some important notes.

Access the Applications Menu, go to "System Tools" and open the MATE Terminal app. Copy/paste each command displayed below in the terminal window, one by one hitting the Enter key on your keyboard after each one.

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-mate-dev/xenial-mate
sudo apt update
sudo apt dist-upgrade
That's it! Now wait for the MATE packages to be upgraded from version 1.12 to 1.14, and when the entire upgrade process has finished, make sure that you reboot your computer. Welcome to the MATE 1.14 desktop environment. Enjoy!
