The Kubuntu developers have announced the general availability of the latest KDE Plasma 5.6.5 desktop environment, along with KDE Frameworks 5.23.0 in the Backports PPA repositories for Kubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) users.

Kubuntu 16.04 arrived earlier this year, on April 21, as part of the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) release, it's an LTS (Long Term Support) version that will receive security updates for about three years.

The release shipped with the KDE Plasma 5.5 desktop environment and KDE Applications 15.12 software suite, which, in time, have been updated several times. And today, Kubuntu 16.04 LTS receives KDE Plasma 5.6.5 and KDE Frameworks 5.23.0.

"Plasma 5.6.5 brings bugfixes and translations from the month of June thanks to contributors, while Frameworks 5.23 brings new fixes in KWallet, KWayland, Breeze and much more," reads the announcement.

KDE Plasma 5.6.5 is the last maintenance release for the KDE Plasma 5.6 desktop environment series, and we have no idea whether the Kubuntu team is planning on moving forward and upgrading to the soon-to-be-released KDE Plasma 5.7.

However, if you're using Kubuntu 16.04 LTS, you can now upgrade to the KDE Plasma 5.6.4 desktop environment and KDE Frameworks 5.23.0 (it includes the latest versions of the default KDE apps) by following the next instructions carefully.

Here's how to update to KDE Plasma 5.6.5 in Kubuntu 16.04 LTS

First, you must open your favorite terminal app (e.g. Konsole) and copy/paste or type the following lines of code in the terminal window, one by one, hitting the Enter key after each one.

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports
sudo apt update && sudo apt -y full-upgrade
Then, wait for all the KDE Plasma 5.6.5 and KDE Frameworks 5.23.0 packages to be downloaded and installed. When the install operation finishes, please reboot your computer. That's it! You now have the latest KDE Plasma 5.6.5 in your Kubuntu 16.04 LTS.
