The Tor Project is proud to announce the general availability of a new stable branch of the widely used Tor software for anonymity online. The Tor 0.2.8 series is currently the most advanced one, and build 0.2.8.6 is now ready for download.

According to the release notes, the TOR 0.2.8 stable branch has been in development for the past several months, during which time over 300 changes have been implemented. The biggest new features since Tor 0.2.7 are performance improvements to client bootstrapping, production-ready authority-side implementation for better identity keys for relays, as well as new security features for Linux OSes.

"After months of work, a new Tor release series is finally stable. Tor 0.2.8.6 is the first stable version of the Tor 0.2.8 series," says Nick Mathewson. "The Tor 0.2.8 series improves client bootstrapping performance, completes the authority-side implementation of improved identity keys for relays, and includes numerous bugfixes and performance improvements throughout the program. This release continues to improve the coverage of Tor's test suite."

This ensures that users that they won't be tracked or monitored by any government agencies when they're using the respective services or updating their Debian installation.
