Canonical, through Adam Conrad, has announced the release of the last maintenance update to the Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) operating system series, version 14.04.5.

New Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS ISO images are now available for download with Ubuntu and all of the official flavors that have participated in the Trusty Tahr release, including Kubuntu 14.04.5 LTS, Xubuntu 14.04.5 LTS, Lubuntu 14.04.5 LTS, Edubuntu 14.04.5 LTS, Ubuntu Studio 14.04.5 LTS, Ubuntu GNOME 14.04.5 LTS, Mythbuntu 14.04.5 LTS, and Ubuntu Kylin 14.04.5 LTS.

These appear to be the last updated installation medium that Canonical will release for the Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) series. They bring a new Linux kernel from the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system, as well as an improved graphics stack, both of which promise support for newer hardware components. Of course, many of the core components have been updated to their latest versions as well.

"The Ubuntu team is pleased to announce the release of Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS (Long-Term Support) for its Desktop, Server, Cloud, and Core products, as well as other flavors of Ubuntu with long-term support," says Adam Conrad. "We have expanded our hardware enablement offering since 12.04, and with 14.04.5, this point release contains an updated kernel and X stack for new installations to support new hardware across all our supported architectures, not just x86."

Ubuntu 14.04.4 LTS users don't need to download the new ISOs

The Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS ISO images have been released for those who want to reinstall their operating system for various reasons or want to deploy the OS on new PCs without going to all the trouble of downloading hundreds of updated packages that have been published via the official software repositories since the Ubuntu 14.04.4 LTS update earlier this year, on February 18.

If your Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) installation is up to date, then you're already running the Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS update on your personal computer. However, you can download the 64-bit and 32-bit Live ISOs with Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS, Kubuntu 14.04.5 LTS, Xubuntu 14.04.5 LTS, Lubuntu 14.04.5 LTS, Edubuntu 14.04.5 LTS, Ubuntu Studio 14.04.5 LTS, Ubuntu GNOME 14.04.5 LTS, Mythbuntu 14.04.5 LTS, and Ubuntu Kylin 14.04.5 LTS right now via our website if you want to.
