The development team behind digiKam, a popular open-source and cross-platform RAW image editor, viewer and organizer for KDE and Qt-based desktop environments and operating systems, has announced today, August 9, 2016, the release of digiKam 5.1.0.

digiKam 5.1.0 is the first maintenance update since the debut of the digiKam 5.0.0 milestone that brought numerous new features and dozens of improvements to the open-source image editor software used by many GNU/Linux users around the world on their KDE desktop environments.

Probably the most important change in the digiKam 5.1.0 update, besides the usual bug fixes, is the inclusion of the libraw 0.18.0 library for reading RAW images from various digital cameras. As such, the new libraw release brings support for the Canon 80D, Canon 1300D, Canon 1DX Mark II, Fujifilm X-Pro2, Fujifilm X70, Fujifilm X-E2S, Nikon D5, Leica M, and Leica X-U.

Samsung Galaxy S7 now officially supported

Additionally, digiKam users will be able to access RAW images from the Olympus Pen F, Olympus SH-3, Panasonic DMC-GX80/85, Panasonic DMC-TZ80/81/85/ZS60, Panasonic DMC-TZ100/101/ZS100, Sony ILCA-68, Sony ILCE-6300, Sony RX1R II, Sony RX10 III, HTC One A9, HTC One M9, PhaseOne IQ150, PhaseOne IQ180 IR, PhaseOne IQ3, and Samsung Galaxy S7.

"In addition, a consolidation of MySQL database interface has been continued. Some optimizations have been introduced to speed-up startup operation, especially to delay the scan from new items after the main interface initialization. Also the option to enable or disable the scan for new items at startup is back in Setup/Miscs dialog page," reads today's announcement.

Of course, there are many other small enhancements implemented by the digiKam developers in this first maintenance update to the digiKam 5.x series, so we recommend that you take a look at the official changelog if you want to know what exactly has been changed. In the meantime, you can download digiKam 5.1.0 for GNU/Linux, as well as Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows operating systems, right now via our website.
