Softpedia has been informed by the OpenMandriva team about the general availability of the final, production-ready release of the OpenMandriva Lx 3.0 operating system.

OpenMandriva Lx 3.0 has been in development for the past four months, as the first Alpha build was made public sometime in the third week of April 2016. Since then, the hard-working development team behind this open source project has managed to keep up with the latest GNU/Linux technologies and software releases so that they can bring you a usable and up-to-date computer OS.

"OpenMandriva Lx is a cutting edge distribution compiled with LLVM/clang. Combined with the high level of optimization used for both code and linking (by enabling LTO) used in its building, this gives the OpenMandriva desktop an unbelievably crisp response to operations on the KDE Plasma 5 desktop which makes it a pleasure to use," reads the announcement.

Here's what's new in OpenMandriva Lx 3.0

Powered by a kernel from the Linux 4.6 series, version 4.6.5 at the moment of the release, OpenMandriva Lx 3.0 comes with the newest systemd 231 init system and uses KDE Plasma 5.6.5 as default desktop environment, along with the KDE Applications 16.04.3 software suite, and KDE Frameworks 5.24.0 collection of add-ons for the Qt GUI toolkit.

Taking a closer look under the hood of OpenMandriva Lx 3.0, we can notice an updated graphics stack based on the latest X.Org Server 1.18.3 and Mesa 12.0.1 3D Graphics Library, support for Samsung's F2FS file system for SSD disk drives, the implementation of Python 3.x support for Python packages, and the rebase of the entire distribution on the LLVM/Clang compiler.

Of course, you'll also find the latest and greatest software applications, such as the Krita digital painting tool, ShowFoto image viewer, digiKam image editor, mpv movie player, VLC Media Player, Plasma Media Center, K3b CD/DVD burning app, and much more. If you don't like the KDE Plasma desktop, you can always switch to the lightweight LXQt.
