A second Beta will be available on September 21

Today, August 31, 2016, the openSUSE Project, through Douglas DeMaio, has proudly announced the availability of the first Beta pre-release version of the upcoming openSUSE Leap 42.2 Linux operating system.

openSUSE Leap 42.2 Beta is here five weeks after the debut of the third and last Alpha milestone, trying to bring more up-to-date GNU/Linux technologies and address many of the issues reported by users during this time.

However, in the good tradition of keeping it a rock-solid GNU/Linux distribution powered by well-tested components, OpenSuSE Leap 42.2 won't contain the latest versions of the software projects included.

For example, software like Qt 5.6 not Qt 5.7 or systemd 228 not systemd 231 are included, so if you want the most advanced releases, you should then adopt the openSUSE Tumbleweed rolling operating system instead.

"Leap is for pragmatic and conservative technology adopters," says Ludwig Nussel, Release Manager of openSUSE Leap. "Testing the beta helps make Leap even more mature, so we encourage as many people as possible to test it."

openSUSE Leap 42.2 to launch on November 16

The development cycle of the openSUSE Leap 42.2 Linux OS will continue with two more Beta pre-releases. While the second Beta should arrive next month, on September 21, the third Beta is currently scheduled for October 6, 2016.

After that, openSUSE Leap 42.2 will get two Release Candidate (RC) builds, on October 18 and November 2, respectively. The final openSUSE Leap 42.2 operating system is set to launch on November 16, one week after SUSECon.

Until then, you can now download the openSUSE Leap 42.2 Beta ISO images and give them a try. Please try to keep in mind that no Live CD is available, and the OS supports only 64-bit (x86_64) systems. Please report bugs you encounter at https://bugzilla.opensuse.org.
